Detection and identification of asbestos in coated roadstone and PAHs analyses

The detection of asbestos as well as the identification of the fiber type in question is done by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on samples by double chemical treatment and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons dosing (naphthalene, acenaphtene, acenaphtylene, fluorene, phenanthrene, antracene, fluoranethene, pyrene, benzo[a]anthracene, indéno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene, benzo[ghi]perylene, dibenzo[a,h]anthracene) by GC/MS in case of absence of asbestos in the sample.
TECHNIQUES AND MATERIALS EMPLOYED
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) : analysis of the fiber’s morphology and additional analysis by electron diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.
PAH: dosing by GC/MS after extraction through sonification.
NATURE OF THE RESULTS
The results are qualitative: presence or absence, identification of one or many types of asbestos in case of presence.
The PAH results are quantitative and expressed in mg/kg (detail of the 16 PAHs and total mass concentration)

Samples packed in a waterproof double sealing bag (ziplock).

Asbestos: Internal method adapted from the NF X 43-050 norm
PAH: internal method adapted from the NF EN 15527 norm
Sample preparation is done without any mechanical grinding, the aim being to prevent an analysis bias by creating fragments.
PAH analysis is only conducted on asbestos-free samples .
